No need to guess. Here are the most common signs.
Red marks in a line along the arms, back and thighs, places that mosquitoes find hard to reach.
Small brown or black dots on the mattress and bedding, a sure sign of activity.
In a more serious infestation, bed bugs give off a distinctive smell in the room.
You see bed bugs or shed skins around the corners, skirting boards, bed frame and bedside tables.
A free inspection gives you clarity in 15-20 minutes.
*We carry out free inspections only in Sofia, Plovdiv and Pernik.
Clear, step by step: from the diagnosis to the final check.
We locate the source, assess the scale of the problem and determine the real risk. You get a clear action plan with specific next steps, prepared so that you know exactly what to expect and how the situation will be brought under control.
We don't work superficially and we don't apply a generic "one-size-fits-all" treatment. We thoroughly treat the critical hotspots found during the inspection, as well as all other risk zones, paths and routes the bed bugs use to hide and move around. That makes the treatment extensive, precise and aimed at the real source of the problem.
Dealing effectively with bed bugs takes a strategy, not a one-off visit. That is why we work to a structured plan of 2-3 treatments 7-8 days apart, so that we also catch the later stages of their development. This builds real control, not temporary relief.
After every visit you receive precise, practical instructions for the next steps. No fuss, no confusion and no needless restrictions, just clear guidance that helps secure the best possible result and bring the problem to an end sooner.
Rushed action rarely solves a bed bug problem. The free inspection lets us establish the real scale of the problem, locate the hotspots and prepare an exact plan for dealing with it effectively.
Those 15-20 minutes are a very important part of our professional approach. They let us see the whole picture and find every nest, while you get clarity, preparation guidance and a concrete solution based on your real situation.
We inspect the beds, mattresses, furniture, skirting boards and every risk zone. We establish where the problem is and how far it has spread.
We explain clearly, step by step, how to prepare your home before the treatment, with no unnecessary stress or confusion.
We don't give ballpark figures "over the phone". After the inspection you get a clear final price based on the real situation and the scope of work.
For us the inspection is a core part of the service. It lets us approach the job with precision and preparation, which makes the solution much more accurate and effective.
We are uncompromising in the fight against bed bugs. The effect is visible from the very first treatment.
Our treatments come with a 30-day guarantee, because we take responsibility for the result.
The 30-day guarantee applies after 3 full treatments of the whole home, provided you strictly follow all instructions on cleaning, laundry and preparing the home.
We monitor how the situation develops and decide on the next steps according to the actual condition, not a template. The aim is to close the problem properly, not just suppress it for a while.
We work in an organised, discreet way with clear communication, because we know this is a sensitive problem for any household.
We will give you an exact price after a FREE inspection and on-site assessment. The price depends on the level of infestation, the number of affected areas, accessibility and the complexity of the treatment.
We locate the hotspots, assess the real situation and give you an exact price for the treatment.
You get a concrete plan with preparation guidance and post-treatment instructions.
We work in an organised way, with clear communication and complete discretion.
We take responsibility for the result after 3 full treatments.
Behind every treatment we carry out there is a real team, a clear process and genuine accountability.
We're not just another faceless pest-control firm. We're Preventa — a company that is open about its people, its experience and the way it works.
We do it because when you let a team into your home, your building or your business, you need to know who you're trusting with the problem.
That's why we work transparently, professionally and with clear accountability for the result.
Bed bugs are small, flat, oval insects whose main and only food is blood. Like other bloodsuckers such as mosquitoes, fleas and ticks, bed bugs are common insects and nobody is safe from them. Over the last 10-15 years they have become a major problem, both worldwide and in Bulgaria. In our work we find them everywhere, from hotels and homes to warehouses and vehicles. Until recently there was a myth that bed bugs only live in dirty, neglected homes, but that is definitely not true, and the fact that you are reading these lines proves it. Bed bugs spread at lightning speed and it is quite easy to pick them up and bring them home. Once they get into your home, they can do considerable damage to your furniture as well as to your physical and mental health. Having bed bugs in your home is unpleasant, but it is by no means terrible or hopeless.
In the following sections you will learn the key facts about bed bugs, and we will share what we know about them, based on our many years of experience and the thousands of successful treatments we have carried out.
Many of you are most likely meeting bed bugs for the first time and have never heard of them or suspected they existed. In fact, many elderly people we have worked with have never heard of bed bugs, and the oldest generation vaguely remembers the bed bug plague after the end of the Second World War. After the war and the bed bug boom, people carried their furniture out into the streets and doused it with boiling water. That method worked wonderfully, as they managed to wipe them out completely.
Until today.
Today we are once again at the peak of a bed bug invasion. It all began in Bulgaria some 15 years ago, but it has been a serious problem in Europe and around the world for quite a long time.
What happened?
Visa requirements for Bulgarians travelling abroad were lifted, low-cost airlines arrived, and all of us started travelling cheaply and without restrictions.
Of course, only the flights were cheap, while good hotels abroad stayed expensive and out of reach for the average Bulgarian budget. So everyone was forced to use cheaper accommodation such as budget apartments, budget hotels and hostels. That is where the spread of bed bugs begins: many people from all corners of the world gathered in shared rooms with all their luggage piled together. On the other hand, cheap hotels and apartments don't take much care of their guests, and even if they know there are bed bugs in a room, they would keep quiet about it for the sake of profit, especially in the busy tourist season. It is the same in Bulgaria with our hotels.
Following that logic, the first sources of bed bugs in Bulgaria were, and still are, student dormitories. Notoriously neglected, they are home to many young people who stay in the rooms for short periods, swap rooms often, travel a lot around Bulgaria and the world, and gather in groups for noisy parties. For many students it is much easier and more convenient to change rooms when there are bed bugs than to deal with the problem. They move to another room, infest it with their luggage, and unsuspecting new students move into the previous one. So the cycle never ends. Many students decide to rent a flat in the city, where 6-8 of them again pile in to split the rent. They visit friends in the dormitories or invite them over, infest the flat, and when the problem becomes too serious they simply move out, leaving the bed bugs to the landlord.
Bed bugs are simple insects whose main goal is feeding and reproduction. What attracts them and guides them is our body temperature and the carbon dioxide we exhale. That is why they always settle close to people, where we sleep and rest. As nocturnal insects, they become active when we are at rest, so they can feed on us undisturbed.
The main habitats of bed bugs are beds, sofas and the objects close to them. Because they move relatively slowly and stay motionless all day, they don't nest very far from beds and sofas. With their flat, small bodies they can squeeze into very narrow gaps, and their main hiding places are:
In moderately infested rooms, bed bugs never settle in wardrobes, as many people assume. Although they are carried in luggage and it would seem logical for them to end up in wardrobes, wardrobes are too far from the beds for bed bugs to sense us there. Even if they do get in, on the very first night they will move to a much more convenient spot in the bed. Our experience shows that bed bugs are found in wardrobes only in extremely heavily infested rooms, where they are practically everywhere. By everywhere, we mean:
This happens after the problem has been neglected for months, even years. Bed bugs develop very quickly and the problem escalates rapidly. That is why a timely response to a bed bug infestation matters.
Female bed bugs are extremely prolific, and within just 2 months a single female can lay up to 500 eggs. The bed bug life cycle has 7 stages: from egg, through 5 nymph stages, to adult. The whole process takes about 40-45 days. The eggs, however, take 5 days to hatch, which is why it is important to keep a set interval between treatments and not lose valuable time, so the nymphs don't get the chance to become adults and keep breeding. Every stage of development makes bed bugs more resistant to insecticides. Treatments should be done at 7-8 day intervals, and as standard, 3 treatments solve the problem. Of course, there are exceptions when conditions aren't suitable for a good-quality treatment (cluttered rooms with lots of furniture and luggage) and it is difficult for us to reach the nests. In such cases more treatments may be needed. The home preparation part depends entirely on you and is key to correct and effective treatment. You can read about preparing your home a little further down.
One of the questions we are asked most often. You will have to find the answer yourself, but we will give you the right pointers to work out the original source.
As we mentioned above, the main place you can pick up bed bugs is hotels, hostels, mountain huts and other types of accommodation. If you end up in an infested room and stay there for a few days, the bed bugs bite you but you don't pay much attention; they get into your luggage and you bring them home. At home the bed bugs quickly settle around the beds, the bites continue, you think it's an allergy, you start treating it with creams, see a doctor, have tests done, and about a month goes by, or even more, before you realise that it is actually bed bugs.
Another way of getting infested is when you have dear guests staying for a few days. This often happens to our clients, and the guests turn out to be really dear. It is not unusual for visitors to your home to have bed bugs in their luggage. It depends on where they were before and where they spent the night. Almost always the guests themselves don't know they have bed bugs in their luggage, so forgive them.
Infested furniture. It very often happens that our clients buy a wonderful second-hand sofa from classified ad sites, only for the sofa to arrive with a load of bed bugs, which explains the low price. Unfortunately, there are people who, instead of dealing with an existing bed bug problem in their furniture or throwing it away, put it up for sale. Avoid second-hand furniture and appliances from other homes. They may come with a whole host of unwelcome guests.
You can also bring bed bugs home from your workplace. This usually happens in jobs where several people use the same workstation: security guards in a booth, drivers sharing a car, lorry drivers, a 24-hour operation with 3-4 shifts at one workstation, and so on.
Public places and public transport. It is possible, but unlikely, to be infested from public transport or public places such as bars, restaurants and the like. Bed bugs need a calm environment to attack, while in bars and on transport there isn't one. They may be there, but they will stay hidden. Still, there is a chance that a bed bug will hitch a ride on your clothes and you will take it home. The riskiest places of this kind are nightclubs with booths. Many different people sit on this furniture, and the booths are large, usually black leather with plenty of folds, which creates an ideal hiding place. It is dark in these venues and you can easily pick up bed bugs on your clothes, your bag or the jacket you threw on the sofa. Next time, sit at the bar.
Bed bug bites look quite similar to mosquito bites, for example. There is an important difference, though: bed bugs bite in a row of 6-7 bites and prefer soft tissue such as the upper arms, thighs, waist and back, all places that are hard for mosquitoes to reach. When biting, bed bugs inject a numbing agent with their saliva, so you don't feel the attack. Once latched on, a bed bug can feed for up to 15 minutes, but they usually bite several times in a row, with much shorter feeding sessions.
The good news is that there are no recorded cases of diseases being transmitted by bed bugs, even though, since they feed on the blood of different people, they may carry dangerous diseases. They can, however, cause serious problems for your skin. Every skin reacts differently to the bites: some people show no pronounced marks, while others develop serious inflammation, hives and allergies.
If you have a serious skin problem, consult a dermatologist to stop the inflammation and prevent later complications.
Bed bug bites
Besides possible allergic reactions, bed bugs can also cause serious psychological problems. Their constant presence and the daily bites can lead to severe irritation, anxiety and even insomnia. Don't let bed bugs take over your life. Get in touch with us!
When the problem starts, you will have bites but will struggle to find the bed bugs themselves. At the beginning you have brought home just a few, which start feeding on you, but it takes time for them to start multiplying and building colonies.
A few weeks after the problem begins, the first colonies start to form. Bed bugs gather in nests in the corners and joints of beds, on the sides and seams of mattresses, in the bed base, the headboards, the bedside tables and so on. As they develop they lay eggs that look like white capsules, and their droppings are small black dots that are hard to remove. As the problem develops, bed bugs begin to give off a distinctive, very pungent smell.
Signs of bed bugs
We always advise you NOT to try to deal with bed bugs yourself.
Professional bed bug treatment requires several things:
Working with us is extremely easy. All you need to do is call us on +359 879 200 906 and we will take care of everything else. After a fairly short conversation with our call centre, we will get a picture of your problem and plan the treatment days.
3 consecutive treatments at 7-8 day intervals are mandatory. At our first contact with you we will schedule the first 2 treatments at the required interval.
The first treatment will kill almost the entire adult bed bug population in your home. We say almost, because in some cases hardier individuals manage to survive the initial treatment.
The second treatment takes place 7-8 days after the first, when all the bed bug eggs will have hatched (eggs hatch in 5 days). Its aim is to wipe out any remaining resistant adults, if there are any, along with all the nymphs and newly hatched insects.
The third treatment is scheduled after a prior conversation with you, a few days after the second. If you still have bites, have noticed a bed bug, or are simply not sure and want us to do a final treatment just in case, we will plan and carry it out.
After each treatment you need to stay out of the treated rooms for 3 hours. You can stay in rooms that have not been treated. Small children and newborns need to stay out for much longer; each case is assessed individually and we will tell you everything during our conversation.
Preparing the rooms is extremely important for us to carry out the treatment properly. It is important for us to have clear access to all the furniture and surfaces that need treating. Here, in a few steps, is what you need to do on your side:
These are the main guidelines for preparation before treatment. Every home has its own specifics, and if anything else needs doing, our technicians will help you right before the treatment.
Once you have dealt with bed bugs at home, it is important to take care not to get infested again. Of course, nobody can be endlessly cautious, but do at least follow some of our guidelines:
Stay calm: bed bugs are not the end of the world, and however bad things may look, it is nothing to fear. The problem will be solved!
Here are answers to the questions our customers ask most.
The most common signs are bites during the night, marks around the bed or mattress, and activity in the sleeping areas. Bites alone cannot always tell you for certain, which is why an on-site inspection is the surest way to identify the problem.
Yes. In many cases customers notice bites or marks first, while the bugs themselves stay hidden in seams, joints, upholstered furniture and hard-to-reach areas around the bed.
Yes, it is possible, but that can only be established after an inspection. With bed bugs, what matters most is not just where they are seen, but where they are really hiding and whether they have spread to other rooms.
In some cases there is a marked improvement right after the first treatment, but bed bugs often call for a step-by-step process. The exact plan depends on how far the infestation has developed, which areas are affected and where the bugs hide.
In most cases, no. The aim is to solve the problem professionally, without unnecessary losses and without hasty decisions. During the inspection we assess the real situation and give you specific advice.
During the treatment there must be no people or pets in the home. Once the stated waiting time has passed and the rooms have been aired, you can use them normally, following the instructions we give you.
The price is set after an on-site inspection and assessment. What counts is how far the infestation has developed, how many rooms are affected, where the bugs hide and how much work is needed. That way you get an accurate price for the real problem.
Preparation depends on the individual case. When you book, or at the inspection, we give you clear instructions on exactly what to prepare so that the work can be done precisely and effectively.
Yes. After the treatment we give you clear instructions on airing the rooms, when you can go back in, and what to keep in mind afterwards.
With bed bugs, DIY attempts often just delay the solution. What matters most is to identify the problem correctly and apply a precise, professional approach suited to your situation.
Every day without action means more bites and more stress. Contact us for a free consultation and inspection.
